NH more than halfway to meeting broadband access goals

New Hampshire has reached a significant milestone in expanding high-speed internet access, connecting 58% of targeted homes and businesses through a $90 million ARPA-funded initiative. With over 1,000 miles of fiber installed, the state aims to bridge the digital divide by 2026.

Key Takeaways:

  • Over 28,000 addresses connected, achieving 58% of the goal.
  • $90 million investment funded by the American Rescue Plan Act.
  • Goal to connect 48,016 homes and businesses by 2026.
  • Partnerships with local providers enhance project reach.
  • Installation of over 1,000 miles of fiber, reaching rural and remote areas.

New Hampshire’s Journey Toward Universal Broadband Access

New Hampshire is making significant strides in its mission to provide high-speed, reliable broadband to unserved and underserved communities. As part of a $90 million effort funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), the state has connected about 28,000 addresses—58% of its goal—to high-speed internet as of December 1.

Progress Achieved Ahead of Schedule

“This was an historic investment, and the results are significant,” said Taylor Caswell, Commissioner of the Department of Business and Economic Affairs (BEA), which administers the program. The initiative aims to connect a total of 48,016 homes and businesses across 115 municipalities by the end of 2026.

Significant Federal Investment

The broadband expansion is funded through ARPA’s Coronavirus Capital Projects Fund, aligning with the Biden-Harris administration’s goal to connect every American household with high-speed, reliable internet. “Well over 1,000 miles of fiber was installed, much of it in rural towns, but also places like the summit of Mount Washington,” Caswell noted, highlighting the project’s extensive reach.

Strategic Partnerships Drive Connectivity

BEA has contracted with the New Hampshire Electric Cooperative for $50 million to connect 23,259 addresses and Consolidated Communications (Fidium) for $40 million to connect 24,757 addresses. These partnerships are pivotal in expanding infrastructure to both rural and remote areas, enhancing operations and communications statewide.

Participation in Affordable Connectivity Program

As part of the federal requirements, all service providers involved participate in the Federal Communications Commission’s Affordable Connectivity Program. This initiative offers eligible households a discount of up to $30 per month, ensuring affordable access to essential internet services for work, education, healthcare, and more.

Looking Toward a Connected Future

The state’s plan prioritizes maximizing the number of locations served at the lowest cost, focusing on networks affiliated with local governments, non-profits, and co-operatives. With continued efforts, New Hampshire is on track to bridge the digital divide by 2026, providing vital connectivity to its residents and aligning with national objectives.
