Polar Introduces Major Updates to Its Smartwatches

Enhancing User Experience with New Features

Polar, the renowned sports technology company, has released a significant free update for its top smartwatches, including the Vantage V3 and Grit X2 Pro models. This update brings a suite of new features designed to enhance user experience and address previous limitations.

Enhanced Maps with Points of Interest

One of the standout features of the update is the introduction of Points of Interest (POI) on offline maps. Users can now see important landmarks and navigate to them during activities. While Polar devices can’t create routes on the fly like some competitors, this upgrade allows users to find vital facilities, such as water points, enhancing the utility of the watches during outdoor adventures.

To access this feature, users need to plug their watch into a computer and use the Polar Flow website to download the latest map versions.

Charging During Activities

Addressing a common concern among endurance athletes, Polar now allows users to charge their smartwatches during activities without interrupting tracking. According to Polar, a 20-minute charge can add up to 10 more hours of GPS tracking, ensuring that the watch can last through epic hikes or ultramarathons.

Introducing the ‘Find My Phone’ Feature

In a move towards greater device integration, Polar has added a ‘Find My Phone’ feature. As long as the user’s phone is within Bluetooth range, the watch can trigger the phone to play a sound. Additionally, the watch displays a map showing the phone’s last known GPS location and an estimate of how far away it is, providing peace of mind for users who misplace their devices.

Improved Training Analysis

Polar’s update also enhances its training analysis capabilities. The Cardio Load feature has been refined to offer more accurate and useful feedback. A new training status called ‘Recovering’ replaces ‘Detraining,’ providing better insights into user recovery levels. The watches are also less prone to indicate that users are ‘Overreaching,’ addressing a frequent observation among users when first starting with a Polar device.

Swimmers benefit from detailed post-workout information, including a breakdown of stroke types and technique insights to aid improvement.

More Customizable Watch Faces

Personalization takes a step forward with the addition of two new analog and three new digital watch face options. These faces can be customized to display data like weather forecasts and include widgets such as music controls, allowing users to tailor their watch interface to their preferences.

How to Update Your Polar Watch

To receive these new features, users should sync their watch with the Polar Flow app and proceed with the update when prompted. The update process takes approximately 15 minutes for the Polar Vantage V3. While the updates are currently available for the Vantage V3 and Grit X2 Pro, they will roll out to the Polar Vantage M3 in the second quarter of 2025. The Polar Ignite 3 will also receive the updates, excluding the map improvements due to the lack of offline maps.

Enhancing the Polar Experience

While these updates may not be groundbreaking in the context of sports watches, they address key user concerns and enhance the overall functionality of Polar devices. By introducing features like charging during activities and improved navigation, Polar is making strides to align its smartwatches more closely with user needs and competitor offerings.
