Youth anglers braved frigid temperatures on Feb. 21 at Heitkamp Pond to take part in the Neil Heitkamp Ice Fishing Derby, which saw its largest turnout to date. Organizers credit local donations and dedicated volunteers for the remarkable success of this long-standing community event, proving that a little cold can’t freeze true enthusiasm.

Each winter, the Walleye Challenge draws anglers to the ice for more than just a fishing competition. For many, it’s a pivotal date in their calendar, marked as much by camaraderie and companionship as by catching fish.
