Smoke from the heating and cooling system at South Fork Elementary School briefly forced everyone outside. Winston-Salem firefighters inspected the building, and students were able to return to their classrooms soon afterward.

A gas leak at High Plains Processing drew a swift response from the Mitchell Fire Department. In under an hour, emergency crews contained the problem by shutting off the source of the leak.
