A Lifelong Commitment to Education

Vercella “Sally” Hemenway, born in 1938 in Luverne, Minnesota, found her true calling in the classroom. After graduating from Luverne High School, she followed her passion for education at Mankato State University. Sally devoted 39 years to teaching kindergarten through second grade in the Long Prairie, Mound, Kasson, and Stewartville school districts. Former students often recalled her patience, creativity, and deep belief in their potential.

Finding Love on the Tennis Courts

It was at Mankato State University’s tennis courts that Sally met George Hemenway, the man who would be her partner for 65 years. Their shared love of adventure and commitment to each other defined their journey through life, creating a strong bond that friends and family admired.

Adventures at Home and Abroad

Together, Sally and George traveled the globe, immersing themselves in new cultures and environments. Yet, her global pursuits never undermined her local commitments. She remained active in her church and proudly served as a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an organization dedicated to women educators. Whether at home or far away, Sally was known for her warm smile and generous spirit.

Remembering a Family’s Matriarch

Sally cherished her roles as wife, mother, and grandmother. Survived by her husband George, her son Paul and daughter-in-law Jessica, and grandchildren Eva and Austin, she found her greatest joy in their company and support. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin Olson and Thilda Knudtson, and her sisters, Norma Olson and Ardis Thorogood.

A Final Tribute

A Celebration of Life service for Sally is pending. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor her are encouraged to support a non-profit of their choice, reflecting her charitable spirit. Organizations she deeply cared about include Samaritan’s Purse and Olmstead Outreach, a ministry of Autumn Ridge Church.
