A New Chapter for JABA

The Jefferson Area Board for Aging (JABA) has ushered in a new era of leadership with the appointment of Judith Selzer as its Chief Executive Officer, effective Monday. Selzer steps into the role at the Charlottesville-based nonprofit that serves senior citizens, their families, and caregivers across Central Virginia, including the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson.

Following in Esteemed Footsteps

Selzer succeeds Marta Keane, who retired in July after more than a decade at the helm of JABA. Under Keane’s leadership, the organization expanded its reach and services, solidifying its role in supporting the aging population in the region. The transition marks a significant moment for JABA as it looks to continue its mission under new guidance.

“This is a transformative moment in the world of healthy aging, and I’m passionate about joining JABA,” Selzer said in a statement. “I will have the privilege of working with colleagues and volunteers to ensure everyone has the opportunity to live their healthiest, most empowered life.”

An Experienced Advocate

With a 25-year career primarily in the nonprofit healthcare sector, Selzer brings a wealth of experience to JABA. “She comes to us with a 25-year career, mainly in the non-profit healthcare enterprise sector,” said Dick Gibson, chair of JABA’s board of directors. “She has spent her career to date helping others and making the world a better place to live.”

Before joining JABA, Selzer ran her own executive coaching and public relations firm for 12 years. Her previous roles include over a decade with Planned Parenthood, where she served as Vice President of Public Policy and Communication in Florida and later as President and CEO of the organization’s operations in Northern New England.

Championing Women’s Voices

Selzer’s commitment to advocacy extends beyond her professional roles. She holds a master’s degree in women’s studies and a graduate certificate in nonprofit management from Florida Atlantic University. In 2007, she co-founded the Women’s Foundation of Palm Beach County, a nonprofit dedicated to collaborating on state policies and expanding opportunities for women and girls.

Currently, Selzer is working to launch two similar organizations in Virginia—Virginia Women’s Foundation and Virginia Women’s Voices—to advocate for the ideas and power of women and girls. “I lead with my values and empower others to develop bold visions coupled with detailed timelines and strategies to get big things done,” she states on her website. “Together we overcome obstacles and create opportunities that positively impact the world.”

JABA’s Continued Mission

Founded in 1975, JABA provides a variety of essential services to the elderly across Central Virginia. These services include adult care centers, community senior centers, Medicare counseling, meal delivery, and health services. The organization’s commitment to enhancing the lives of seniors remains steadfast as it embraces new leadership.

Looking Ahead

Selzer’s appointment signifies a commitment to both continuity and innovation for JABA. Her extensive background in healthcare and advocacy positions her to lead the organization into its next chapter. As the aging population continues to grow, her leadership will be crucial in ensuring that seniors in Central Virginia have access to the resources and support they need.
