Lewis Hamilton eats favourite 99p snack that is also a superfood every day

Lewis Hamilton credits his daily consumption of hummus as a key component of his plant-based diet, fueling his continued success in Formula 1. Since adopting veganism in 2017, the seven-time champion has defied skeptics and added four more titles to his name.

Key Takeaways:

  • Lewis Hamilton eats hummus every day as part of his vegan diet.
  • He adopted veganism in 2017, improving his physical and mental wellbeing.
  • He won four world titles after switching to a plant-based diet despite initial skepticism.
  • Hummus is a superfood with numerous health benefits and is affordable.
  • Hamilton overcame early adversities and is set to join Ferrari in 2025.

Hamilton’s Vegan Journey

Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula 1 champion, has revealed that he eats hummus every day as part of his strict vegan diet. He adopted a vegan lifestyle back in 2017, influenced by a friend from New York, and believes the change has significantly boosted his physical and mental wellbeing.

“I used to look at hummus and I was like, ‘no way would I ever eat hummus’. And I love it now. It’s my go-to thing every day,” Hamilton shared in an interview with Vanity Fair in 2022.

Defying the Skeptics

Initially, doctors warned Hamilton that he might not receive the necessary protein to compete at the highest levels in the physically demanding world of Formula 1. Yet, he has continued to deliver exceptional performances on the world stage, winning four of his seven world titles since making the dietary change.

Hamilton isn’t alone in his plant-based pursuits. Other athletes like Team USA’s Alex Morgan, tennis star Nick Kyrgios, and former Arsenal player Hector Bellerin have also embraced veganism, demonstrating that a plant-based diet can support high-level athletic performance.

The Power of Hummus

Hummus, Hamilton’s snack of choice, is considered a superfood. It contains a wealth of vitamins and minerals, may help ease inflammation due to its powerful antioxidants, supports digestive health, and may also help manage blood sugar levels. Studies suggest that the chickpea-based food can promote heart health and support weight management.

Despite its numerous health benefits, hummus remains an accessible option. It can be purchased for as little as 99p in British supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s, although it may not be Hamilton’s personal brand of choice.

Overcoming Adversity

Beyond his dietary choices, Hamilton has continuously proven doubters wrong throughout his life. Reflecting on his school years, he recounted, “When I was at school, I was dyslexic and struggling like hell and one of the only few Black kids in my school, being put in the lowest classes and never given a chance to progress or even helped to progress. Teachers were telling me, ‘you’re never going to be nothing’. I remember being behind the shed, in tears, like, ‘I’m not going to be anything’. And believing it for a split second.”

Rather than holding grudges, Hamilton admitted, “I don’t actually hold any grudge against those people, because they fuelled me up.” His resilience and determination have propelled him to exceed any expectations from his schooldays.

Looking Ahead to Ferrari

Hamilton’s journey continues as he is set to switch allegiance to Ferrari for the 2025 season, racing alongside Charles Leclerc. With hopes of toppling Red Bull’s Max Verstappen—who has lifted four consecutive championships since the 2021 season—Hamilton remains focused on success.

To date, he has amassed an impressive record: 105 race wins, 202 podiums, and 4,862.5 career points. His commitment to a plant-based diet and daily hummus habit appears to be just one of the many factors contributing to his enduring prowess on the racetrack.
